Where I'm from.

As we finished up with week one and our presentations, I came to the realization that it’s very hard to sum up our generation with just the ten of us. Although we’re all very different, it’s still impossible to sum up our generation. The world is so large filled with the youth and I can only speak on what I have seen.

In my group that I was broken up into, we all had very different backgrounds. Just here in Portland, Or, all of us aren’t the same and it’s hard to come up with one word to describe us all. Some may say ‘wild,’ but I can also say, ‘Well no, that’s not what I am!’ It’s just very difficult to say because it’s so many of us. All I could really speak on is what I was exposed to, and the people that surround me.

Growing up in North and Northeast Portland, the word ‘wild’ would be a great word to describe the youth.  Where I’m from there’s a lot of fighting, drinking, gangs, drugs, sex, etc. But still it maintains to have some very driven and intelligent individuals who rise above it all. Everybody knows everybody where I’m from; in the city it’s very small. A lot of who I know had it hard growing up. With that being said, they only know what they have grown up seeing and so that’s what their lives are like. Where I’m from, it’s almost like our elders are afraid to speak up. It’s so much gang violence in N and NE Portland right now, it’s horrible.

It’s very rough where I’m from, but I was fortunate to grow up in a stable home with both my parents which is rare. Having family and siblings grow up in poverty, and experiencing that life, I know what it’s like. It breaks some spirits and drive, but can also help it. It depends on the individual a lot. My generation where I’m from goes to a lot of entertainers for inspiration. It seems where I’m from everyone wants to be famous (known) and they would do any and everything to get there, even if it’s being like someone else. It’s just who they are.

But I do have to say, I love where I’m from just because it’s people I grew up with, and behind it all, they mean no harm, just the lives they were born into!
